FROM KARBALA'S MARTYR TO THE BELOVED IMAGE: SAINT HUSEYIN.

Abstract

One of the most desperate and deplorable incidents in the Islamic history is the Incident of Karbala. This incident of Saint Huseyin having been cruelly martyrized has left deep scars in the imagination of the public. Literatures of many Muslim countries have been affected by this incident, which has been subject to many poetical, prosaic, or poetical-prosaic artifacts such as "Karbala elegie", "Muharremiye" and "Maktel-i Huseyin", which is the most significant. When the contextualization in these artifacts is considered, a cliché structure consisting of the narration regarding how Saint Huseyin had been martyrized and citation of the negative sentiments about Yezid, attracts attention. However, in "Hüseynüñ" rhymed poems which we came across in a poems mecmua, a utilization apart from these clichés is in question. In these poems, the figures related to the subject have turned into symbols and been used for describing the beloved - lover relation in the Ottoman poetry's perception of love. In this study, first of all, the manner regarding how Saint Huseyin has been impersonated as a legendary character and been subject to literary works shall be considered, and then, their utilization in the above mentioned poems shall be emphasized.
